What this module covers
When you get a diagnosis, all your attention goes to the problem. That is understandable — your doctor is focused on it, the prescription is about it, every follow-up circles back to it. But driving requires two things at once: watching the dashboard, and watching the road ahead.
This module is about learning to do both.
First, your coordinates — the red dot on the map. That has two halves. The clinical picture your doctor has identified, and everything else: the habits that led here, the stress you are carrying, the sleep you are not getting, the relationships draining or sustaining you.
Then, your destination. Here is where most people stop. Your doctor already has a destination in mind for you, and it is healthy — a good goal, and also where their map ends. Because health is not somewhere you arrive. It is the vehicle that gets you to the thing you actually want: being present at your kid’s game, having a sharp enough mind for the work that matters, having the capacity to show up for the people who depend on you.
The module closes with four questions worth asking at your next appointment, including the one most people never think to ask.
Three takeaways
- The red dot is where you start, not where you are going. Most people find it and then stare at it.
- You do not actually want to be healthy — you want what health makes possible. Naming that specifically is what makes the rest of the work stick.
- Ask what else was considered, including the unlikely things. Doctors follow probabilities, and uncommon things get skipped precisely because they are uncommon.
Doing this with someone
The worksheet is yours to keep and it works on its own. If you want a second set of eyes on it — most people write a destination that is really someone else’s, and it takes a conversation to find your own — that is what the coaching is for. See how coaching works.
